LEADING amateur rugby league club Leigh East are at the centre of a major investigation after their match at Heworth on Saturday was abandoned because of fighting.

Six players were sent off, three from each team, after a brawl between both sides but when fighting continued as the players made their way to the dressing rooms, the match official abandoned the game.

Now East and Heworth, National Conference Division One rivals face investigation by the League's governing body.

National Conference boss Terry Parle says: "It's a major disappointment that two of our leading teams have been involved in an incident of this nature.

"The National Conference prides itself on its exemplorary disciplinary record and we'll take whatever steps are necessary to prevent any repetition.

"But at this stage we are not prejudging any individual or club. We are awaiting the full report from the match officials and then we'll put our normal disciplinary procedure into place. That would normally take 2-3 weeks."
