THE Hatter's Information Centre has begun a national survey of hat-wearing among men throughout the country. The Evening News has decided to conduct its own survey of the gentleman's hat - for and against it. After an hour's survey of passers-by in Bradshawgate during the week, approximately 66 per cent of males over 21 were calculated to be hatless. How about hat wearers? In Bolton, well over 90 per cent of the champions of gentlemen's headgear were estimated to be wearing the trilby. The cloth cap, it was found, is only popular among manual workers, and only one or two of the over-forties are seen to be wearing it. As for the bowler, it seems that even the professional classes now prefer the 'Anthony Eden' Homburg.

AT the Borough Court on Thursday, James Whittle, groom, 34, Lyon-street, was charged with absenting himself from the service of his master, Dr Charles McCarthy, 128 St George's-road. The charge was preferred under the Master and Servants' Act, which has recently come into operation. Dr McCarthy said that on Friday week, the defendant absented himself, having locked the stable door before his departure. He went to the defendant's house and found him drunk. He claimed £1 for the inconvenience he was put to, having had to hire a cab, to be three hours longer over his calls, and secure the services of another groom. The defendant did not deny having absented himself, and was fined 15s and costs. Dr McCarthy paid the costs for the defendant, as he only desired to learn him his duty.
