RESIDENTS of a "neglected" Bolton ward are confident a planned community centre will give their area a much-needed heart.
Members of Captains Clough Residents' Association claim Smithills has been left virtually without community facilities because it repeatedly loses out to neighbouring Halliwell and Johnson Fold.
They say that without a focal point, community spirit has been unable to flourish properly in the area.
But the finishing touches are being put to a deal which would see the Community Association take over part of the council-owned Pavilion in Church Road.
Bolton West MP Ruth Kelly was due to meet association members today to add her backing to the ambitious plans which include:
A younger children's youth club and drop-in centre for older youth.
A befriending service for the elderly.
A food co-operative so that fresh fruit and vegetables can be bought cheaply.
A book club and possible venue for a travelling library.
Committee member Frances Hamer said: "This would be the community heart which we are short of.
"It's not only for the youngsters. There's nothing for the elderly up here either. Some of them never get outside the front door because it's too far to go into the town and too far to go to Johnson Fold." Mrs Kelly said: "People in the Captains Clough area feel that they have not received as much investment in their community as surrounding areas.
"For instance, on Saturday I will be opening the excellent new community centre in Daisy Hill which has been built with money from Bolton Council in partnership with local people.
"Captains Clough residents want similar facilities in their area. I want to take this opportunity in Smithills to have a look around, chat with the residents and see if we can get some action to address these concerns."
Residents association members estimate converting the large disused Pavilion room into a community centre will cost around £30,000.
They have welcomed support from the council's leisure services department.
