THE Environment Agency advises people in Flood Warning areas, where flooding is expected, to move cars, food, pets and valuables to safety.
They should put up sandbags and floodboards to minimise damage and keep an eye on relatives and neighbours to make sure they are safe.
Residents should be prepared to turn off their gas and electricity supplies and listen to the news and the agency's Floodline on 0845 9881188 for up-to-date information.
Those living in areas at severe risk of flooding are advised to keep candles, warm clothing and sturdy footwear, essential medication, food and drinking water close to hand.
Residents should be prepared to evacuate their homes if asked by the emergency services.
