THE most interesting game on paper was between Harlequins, last season's league champions, and Nomads, the present leaders but oth sides were without key players.
Nomads shocked Harlequins when they went ahead through a goal from Annette Neal after only two minutes. In the first quarter Nomads were the more dangerous and could have added to their score, but slowly Harlequins got into their stride and Nomads were forced back onto the defence. There were no further goals in the first half.
After only six minutes of the second half Sue Hammond equalised, and Harlequins went on to exert severe pressure on the Nomads defence. The Nomads forwards never really got going in this half, but their defence played extremely well with Judy Fleming outstanding. With just one minute to go, when it looked as though a draw was inevitable, a cruel twist of fate gave Harlequins the win, when a hit across the circle was deflected by a defender past the goalkeeper. Players of the match were for Harlequins Jackie Wright, and for Nomads Judy Fleming.
The match between Hanson and Elton 1st was not a classic as there was far too much bunching in the middle of the pitch, with a corresponding reduction in goal scoring opportunities. Angela Fitzpatrick scored the only goal of the match after 20 minutes.
In the second half Elton's best chance came when the ball was pushed between the goalkeepers legs, only to be scrambled clear by the defence. Player of the match was Suzanne Simpson for Hanson, and Alison Wrigley for Elton.
Elton B were outplayed by County Ladies, who helped themselves to three goals in the first half, and added a fourth in the last minute of the match.
Goalscorers were Barbara Hough (2), Diane Bates and Kelly Webber. POM Amanda Hill for Elton and Diane Bates for County.
RESULTS: Hanson 1 Elton 1st 0; Elton B 0 County Ladies 4; Harlequins 2 Nomads 1; Eagley FS 1 Little Lever 2; Hayvern St James 1 Hindley 4; Elton C 0 Elton 2nd 3.
