ANNIE Lennox, Barbara Windsor, Alan Tichmarsh, Pam Ferris and Philip Schofield are among the dozens of celebrities who have decorated their own "designer" dog collars to be auctioned on behalf of two animal welfare charities.

The collars have been created in support of the Blue Cross' Victoria Animal Hospital appeal and the Canine Partners for Independence (CPI) and will be auctioned on-line throughout November on the Petspark.com website.

The initiative has been organised by the two charities in conjunction with Petspark.com. The Blue Cross, at over 100 years old, is one of Britain's oldest welfare charities. It has 11 adoption centres, four veterinary hospitals and two equine centres around the country.

The charity finds caring new homes for more than 9,000 animals every year and carries out 60,000 veterinary consultations at its animal hospitals on an annual basis.

CPI trains dogs to help disabled people become more independent and less reliant on others. The dogs are taught to perform basic daily chores which many of the disabled find impossible to do.
