A BOLTON primary school excursion to the Lake District suffered delays when the coach the party was travelling in filled with smoke and had to be evacuated.

The mixed party of pupils from Years Five and Six left from Blackshaw County Primary School, Bideford Drive, at 8.30am heading for Grasmere.

The party was due back at the school at 6.30pm but because of a fault on the coach parents had an anxious two hour wait before the coach returned at 8.30pm.

Headteacher Linda Lesure praised teachers and parent helpers for their actions during the incident.

"This is not the first coach to ever break down," she said. "But it filled with smoke just outside of Windermere. The children were taken to a place of safety and the staff, parents and the coach company were all brilliant."
