THE Queen today pressed a single black button - and symbolically launched Britain's new oil era. The cost to BP of reaching this stage in the race to bring oil ashore is £745 million. For that investment, the Forties Field will be supplying almost one quarter of Britain's present-day oil usage in less than two years.

BLACK belt karate instructor Tom Slaven, aged 35, nursed an aching right hand in Sydney today after claiming a new world record for smashing 4,487 house bricks in an hour.

THE hope that the stigma attached to Flash-st. School will be removed now that the school has removed to pleasanter surroundings, was expressed by the Mayor, Ald Mrs Wright, at the opening of Woodside School, Chorley New-rd., yesterday. The Mayor told of the long search for premises for the school. She thought it fitting that the premises at last acquired should be the former home of the late Mr J.P. Taylor, who was remembered as a keen educationalist. The opening ceremony was performed by Mrs Taylor.

MESSRS Lomax, Sons, and Mills, auctioneered, submitted several lots of valuable property for sale at the Swan Hotel. The family residence, known as Park Hill House, at the junction of Chorley New and Old-roads, late in the occupation of Mr Orrell, which contained 840 square yards, subject to annual chief rent of £4, sold for £2,000. Two three-storey warehouses, Bradshaw-court, Charles-street, Little Bolton, in the occupation of Mr Geo. Healey, sold for £270; and a plot of freehold land in Bradshaw-court and Whitom-yard, off Charles-street, subject to the annual chief rent of 8s 9d, produced £60. At the same time and place, the Brewer's Arms beerhouse, Newport-street, and two houses, Nos 2 and 4 Back Newport-street, sold for £1,030.
