A FAMILY is today mourning the death of a teenager killed in an horrific smash.

Badar Rafique, aged 19, suffered multiple head injuries when he was hurled through the windscreen of his car during the smash at Chorley Old Road, Bolton, yesterday afternoon. The road was closed for serval hours.

The young driver, who lived in Belgrave Street, in the Brownlow Fold area of Bolton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Rafique's K-reg Honda Civic was in collision with a K-reg Rover 620, driven by Phillip Breckell, a 49-year-old from Barlow Street, Horwich.

The teenager -- who police said was not wearing a seatbelt -- was thought to have lost control and his car ploughed into a drystone wall outside the Bob Smithy Inn.

Huge tailbacks around the junction of Moss Bank Way and Chorley Old Road built up as motorists battled with diversions put in place by police.

Chorley Old Road was closed between Moss Bank Way and Old Kiln Lane from the time of the incident at 2.10pm until around 6pm yesterday causing havoc on the roads.

Mr Breckell and his wife Pauline, 50, were detained overnight at the Royal Bolton Hospital suffering from minor injuries.

In a separate accident in Deane Road, Bolton, pedestrian Bhikhi Chhagan Gadhia, aged 58, suffered a broken hip. Mr Chhagan, from Deane, was in collision with a Land Rover driven by James Sandiford, a 20-year-old from Hulton Lane, Deane.

A D-reg BMW, driven by Neil Chapman, 24, of Wilmslow Road, Westhoughton, also collided with the back of the Land Rover.

The incident, shorlty after 11am shut Deane Road from the junction with College Way for two and a half hours.
