THE Reebok Stadium final of the Goldline Trophy in association with the Bolton Evening News will witness an all West Lancs League affair as Division One Tempest United take on Premier Division Charnock Richard on Monday night.
With Tempest's place already booked in the first ever amateur final to be staged at the Reebok Charnock had to overcome the fierce and determined challenge of Manchester League Division One Breightmet United for a nailbiting 4-3 victory in Sunday's semi final.
John Kerrigan's far post volley set Charnock on their way after only 12 minutes and by the 20th minute mark the hapless Simon O'Dowd had put past his own keeper to make it 2-0.
On 35 minutes Jimmy Beavers was upended and Breightmet hit back as Adam Wigley sent the home keeper the wrong way to convert the penalty. On 55 minutes the most impressive player on the field 17-year-old United striker Beavers raced through two Charnock defenders and slotted home for 2-2.
Within minutes United full back Phil Hinks was badly injured in a collision with his goalkeeper and was carried off but thankfully worries of a broken leg for the young player later proved to be unfounded. With a Reebok meeting with his old club Tempest as the extra incentive Charnock defender Steve Iley now took centre stage.
The giant centre back nearly ripped the netting off its fastenings with a 70th minute header from a corner and five minutes later showed his all round quality with an immaculate 25-yard finish. Breightmet pulled on back on 77 minutes through Paul Fletcher.
"That was one of the best games we have ever had in the Goldline," enthused main organiser Bob Shuttleworth. The Penalty Prize competition to take place on finals night at the Reebok will be between Atherton Town and Rivington.
