BOLTON Wanderers moved into joint top spot in the Second Division last night with a 4-1 win over Portsmouth at Burnden Park. The win extends the Wanderers' unbeaten run to 13 games, and the biggest gate of the season - 18,538 - saw Paul Jones, Garry Jones (2) and Neil Whatmore score the goals which saw the side home.

TWO local men who went on a car outing to St Annes yesterday ended their trip with one man half dragging, half carrying his colleague on a dramatic trek over two miles across the sands to escape the rising tide. Hero of the incident was Alan Deaton, a 39-years-old employee in a tobacco firm, 17, Elton-ave., Farnworth. His friend was a 39-years-old tobacco manufacturer, William Henry Hartley, 1, Boscobel-rd., Bolton, who was injured when he jumped six feet on to the sands from Peet's Light, a well-known 30ft. high landmark in the Ribble channel, south-west of St Annes pier. Mr Deaton ran back to get their car to run it out to the lighthouse, but it got stuck in the sand, and it had to be abandoned, so he had to drag his friend back to safety. The car was recovered from the quicksand only a short time before the vehicle was covered by the tide.

WE are enabled today to place before our readers an abstract of a notice which will shortly be published in the Gazette, and deposited with the Clerk of the Peace for the County, which are the initial steps enabling the Bolton Junctions Railway Co. to bring their project before Parliament in the ensuing Session. At present there are no new features of the scheme to describe, except that the directors have fixed upon their terminus and site for the railway station at Bolton. Our readers will be interested in knowing that the site selected is that lying between Brown-street and Folds-road, and the station will front the bottom of Kay-street and the end of Bow-street. The people of Little Bolton will thus be gratified with a station on their side of the town.
In addition to these powers being sought, powers will also be sought by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company to continue the line projected, but not yet completed, to Astley Bridge under the Blackburn-road, and by tunnelling, construct a loop line to Lostock Junction, which line, we understand, is intended to be used as a line for luggage traffic.
