Not much machinery to help building roads in those days . . . the caption to this picture, which appeared in September, 1936, read: 'Obstructions in the form of solid rock have met the engineers building the new road from Smithills to Astley Bridge. The picture shows workmen cutting and drilling through a large outcrop of hard rock at Lumwood, Forest-rd., Halliwell'.
