THE taxman desperately wants to give thousands of pounds back to Chorley folk!
Inland Revenue says there are several million people nationwide on low incomes who may be entitled to some tax back on their savings interest.
And until people get in touch, local tax offices do not know what amounts people can claim.
John Tapp, customer service manager at Chorley Tax Office, Lingmell House, Water Street, said: "In the Chorley area alone there are thousands of people -- particularly pensioners, married women, students and children -- who could get some tax back on their bank and building society interest.
"If you think you may be one of them you can find out more by getting in touch with us now."
He added: "If you are on a low income you probably don't get an annual tax return to fill in.
"So, if you are entitled to some tax back on your bank and building society interest we won't be able to help you unless you tell us about it."
Mr Tapp said the estimated amount that could be claimed back in Chorley was "an unknown" quantity but that it was likely to run into thousands of pounds."
He said several hundred people sought information when the local tax office held an advice session in Tesco, Chorley, at the end of last month.
Mr Tapp said people could always call in to the tax office between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, or telephone on 01257 236600 during the same period for free help about their personal circumstances.
Inland Revenue explained that banks and building societies are required to take income tax off the interest they pay to savers.
However people whose taxable income is covered by their tax allowance can register to get their interest "gross".
It is also possible for savers to claim back tax from the Inland Revenue if the tax taken off their interest is more than they are due to pay.
This could happen because part of the interest is covered by personal allowances, or part or all of it falls within the 10p starting rate band.
