MR B. Braine (C. Billericay) asked the Home Secretary in the Commons today what steps he proposes to take to check the continuing rise in the number of crimes of violence. He was also asked whether in view of the marked increase in crimes of violence in the first six months of this year, he would consider the reimposition of corporal punishment for hardened criminals in this type of case.
Replying to both these questions, Mr Chuter Ede said, 'I am satisfied that the penalties prescribed by law for crimes of violence are adequate. The Government has no intention of reintroducing corporal punishment, which was abolished in 1948.'
