I AM at present researching case studies of 'back-street' abortions, prior to the 1967 Abortion Act.
Of particular interest are cases which occurred in the 1920s and '30s, as, of course, anyone having had such an experience would by now be quite elderly, and I would be indebted to those who felt they were prepared to record such events before those events pass, untold and unrecorded, out of our social history.
Any cases in any decade would be of important interest, and any of your readers who felt prepared to report their personal experience of 'back-street' abortion would receive written confirmation that their account would be completely confidential. No disclosure of sources of information would be made available either. All place names and personal names would be altered to avoid identification.
Should there be anyone who performed such abortions willing to talk to me, they too would be assured, with written confirmation, that any information they were prepared to divulge would again be treated with complete confidentiality.
If any of your readers feel they have a story to tell, they can contact me by letter or telephone in the first instance, at which stage further arrangements can be made for a meeting if necessary.
