Woking 1 Leigh RMI 1
RMI's prolific goalscorer Tony Black fired home a second half penalty to earn the Railwaymen a draw ahead of Sunday's FA Cup tie with Millwall.
Their fixture at the Kingsfield stadium almost seemed a prelude to greater things as the goalmouths were threatened more by the torrential rain than the action on the field.
Woking started with a venomous intent that had the visitors pinned on the back foot, but after a successful defensive opening spell, they began to create more chances through the winger Steve Jones - who seemed to be struggling for full fitness after being withdrawn from the Doncaster game with a hamstring problem.
Jones cleverly impersonated a quarterback's field goal attempt to clear the stand before shooting straight into the body of Vince Matassa shortly before half time.
It was the visitors who had started to control the game, and therefore no surprise when they took the lead with just 22 minutes remaining. Jones was impeded by goalkeeper Matassa and Black fired home his ninth league goal of the season from the spot.
To some extent, the presence of Black is a pleasant relief to Leigh at this stage of the season. Without him, they would have scored only 13 times in 18 games and be fighting relegation.
With 1,400 Woking fans baying for the equaliser, RMI succumbed to the pressure, and under contentious circumstances. The hosts were awarded a penalty from referee Kettle after Randall was adjudged to have been fouled in stoppage time.
Leigh were distraught. Having already lost a potential three points in favour of a solitary one at Chester's Deva Stadium in the last month, it was Woking's turn to hammer the nail into the Railwaymen's coffin when Griffin drilled home the penalty to the delight of the home crowd.
A few Leigh players surrounded the officials at the end of the game to stage a protest at what they felt had been an injustice. It would have been much worse had Pitman not struck his deflected free-kick against the woodwork shortly before.
Leigh now take a 14 day rest Nationwide Conference action, playing next against Morecambe on November 25 at Hilton Park.
