I WRITE as a Boltonian, having been sent a copy of your newspaper concerning the proposed tram link for Bolton.
I would wholly support the idea as being an efficient, economic and environmentally-friendly philosophy. Tram systems have been successfully instigated in Sheffield, Croydon and Manchester. Above all, we should remember the trams in Blackpool, where the pre-war 'Coronation' class are still in active service. I do fondly recall, in my early years, the Bolton trams running around the town.
May I add a cautionary note? It is important that the town planners and other departments should pay very careful attention to the details of traction poles, wires and other installations. The Manchester trams have created some visual problems in St Peter's Square, for example, where the tram route crudely slices through a civic setting without too much regard to the overall design and arrangement.
Let Bolton set a better example in its tram link design.
