A CALL has gone out for Chorley folk to rally round and reveal where the town's war memorials are located.
The appeal from Chorley Civic Society follows last week's article in the Citizen which featured the special memorial in Anderton CP School, Babylon Lane -- erected many years ago in memory of the school's 'Old Boys' who gave their lives and won distinctions in the Great War.
The four-sided tribute shows the names of 38 ex-pupils of Adlington District Council School, as it used to be called, who fought in the bloody conflict.
Hazel Yates, secretary of Chorley Civic Society, contacted the Citizen to explain: "Chorley Civic Society has been doing work for the Imperial War Museum on recording war memorials locally.
"We have increased the number the Imperial War Museum have listed from 14 to over 40. We had no idea about this one in Anderton County Primary School."
She added: "It is making us wonder how many more there might be tucked away in other schools of which we have no knowledge, or any other places, such as pubs and clubs. There are 24 parishes in Chorley and we have only got forty something recorded. We are quite sure a lot have slipped through the net."
Some could even be at risk from new development, said Hazel, such as the one in the Methodist Chapel, Adlington.
The Methodist Church has combined with the United Reformed Church there and the chapel has been put on the market.
Hazel concluded: "It is worrying because the site is up for sale. It is probably going to be knocked down."
Anybody who can help with the Civic Society's war memorial project should contact Hazel on 01257 481778.
