BE PREPARED! That's the timely advice to older drivers from Age Concern in the run-up to winter driving.

With the unusually high rainfall and some earlier than anticipated snowfall already experienced throughout the North West region, the advice to take some precautionary car maintenance measures is both timely and focussed.

It is customary at this time of the year for motoring organisations, the police and others to appeal for motorists to take some basic safety and preparatory steps now in the hope of avoiding major problems later in the winter.

Malcolm Strange, of Age Concern Bolton, endorses the wisdom of this advice: "Setting time aside now to check tyres, brakes, batteries, anti-freeze, windscreen wipers and washers could prove to be a very sensible investment over the months ahead.

"Particularly important is the need to ensure that tyres and brakes are maintained in a state of good repair for winter driving.

"Tyres are the only contact a vehicle has with the road. The grip needed by a car for steering, accelerating, braking and stopping, comes from a patch of tread which, in reality, isn't much bigger than the size of an average footprint.

"Not surprisingly, therefore, the police, motoring organisations and manufacturers recommend that tyres should be replaced well before the legal minimum is reached. "

Drivers are also reminded not to forget that in wet or icy conditions they need to allow a greater distance for braking to avoid locking wheels and skidding.

But as Malcolm continues: "Unfortunately, no amount of regular servicing, maintenance or routine checks can provide an absolute guarantee of trouble-free driving throughout the winter.

"That's why it makes sense to ensure that you have the added reassurance of a comprehensive motor breakdown service such as the one offered by Age Concern Insurance Services.

"We don't just help if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere. Our specialists will also come to your home if your car won't start.

"With vehicle recovery, medical transfer and driver rescue all part of the package, and backed by Europ Assistance, Europe's largest motoring organisation, you'll find our breakdown service offers you exceptional value for money."

And with premiums for comprehensive cover throughout the UK starting from only £55 a year or, just over £1 a week, that has to be a price worth paying for hassle-free driving and peace of mind this winter."
