IF Matt Glennon's name appears on the Carlisle scoresheet in the coming weeks, it won't raise too many eyebrows down Brunton Park way.

Blues' keepers these days are getting as many accolades for scoring goals as they are for saving them!

Jimmy Glass set the standard with his historic last-gasp winner against Plymouth to keep Carlisle in the League on the last day of the 98-99 season and Peter Keen followed suit last month when he scored against Blackpool - with less success in his case as the Seasiders ran out 3-2 winners.

Glennon didn't manage to emulate his predecessors in the No 1 shirt when he made his debut on Saturday but his performance in the 3-1 win over Southend was, nonetheless, appreciated by his new manager Ian Atkins as the Cumbrians recorded their first home win since March 28 and ended a dismal run that had seen them take just one point from 13 games!

"The keeper was superb," Atkins said of the Wanderers' No 3 who has joined Carlisle on loan for the rest of the season.

"The players gained confidence in him very quickly because he is very loud!"

Loud? The Euxton training ground's certainly a much quieter place without young Glennon, who can never be accused of being shy!

For his part, Sam Allardyce reckons the transfer will have a serious bearing on the young man's career.

"It's great first team experience for Matty," the manager said after agreeing the deal.

"It's what he needs because he was only playing every other reserve game with Steve (Banks) having the other.

"Matty can play for Carlisle's first team now, week in and week out, as long as he's good enough and that will be great experience for him.

"We'll find out what type of goalkeeper he is when he comes back because I think this is make or break as to what level he should play at."
