BOLTON sufferers of a condition which leaves them feeling "locked inside" their own heads are being given an opportunity to share their experiences.

The Bolton Aphasia Self Help Group, BASH, is welcoming new members to an informal welcome event on Friday.

Aphasia leaves people struggling to communicate after a stroke or head injury.

It is caused by damage to the language area of the brain which can affect a person's ability to understand, speak, read or write, yet their intellect remains intact.

A spokesman said: "People with aphasia have described the experience as 'being locked inside my own head'.

"It can be very frustrating and isolating because social interactions and relationships are affected."

To help local people, the Bolton Aphasia Self Help Group was set up three years ago.

The spokesman said: "It gives people the chance to meet others with similar problems. It provides opportunities for friendships, mutual support and social activities.

"The main purpose of the group is to help people with aphasia to develop the confidence to use their communication skills, however limited, through social interaction."

The group's informal welcome meeting for new members takes place at Bolton Library from 10am to 12.30pm. Transport can be arranged. Further details are from Suzanne on 0777 941 2528, or Gill on 01204 696883.
