DR Ashton may be a wealthy man compared to many ordinary working men and women, but it is foolish to suggest that because he can easily afford to pay for his petrol, that his protests against the fuel protesters are insincere or invalid.
On the contrary, Dr Ashton's letter (Yours Views: November 4) should be taken very seriously. His views reflect those of many others working within the NHS, who have grave concern for the sick and infirm. He is right to impress upon the protesters that they could indeed end up with blood on their hands, should further blockades cause fuel and food shortages.
The suggestion that the good doctor might be "currying favour with HM's Government" with a view to a knighthood, or the post of Government Chief Medical Officer, is, to say the least, callous.
Dr Ashton has no need to curry favour. His hard work and dedication have already earned him high honours. By the same merit, a knighthood, or the post of Government Chief Medical Officer, would come as no surprise.
