I WAS very concerned by two articles in your Wednesday, November 15 edition.
I would like to point out to Mr Ronald Young that his Orange Badge does not entitle him to park at no charge on an official car park. He may, of course, use meter and pay and display street parking at no cost.
The fact that councils and car park operators allow badge holders certain concessions, by providing designated areas with or without an appropriate fee dispensation is a matter of courtesy, and one that is very much appreciated by most badge holders.
Why does Mr Young feel that he should be provided with free parking? He already receives DLA, and pays no road tax, and has the opportunity of availing himself of Motability facilities. Let us be frank, Mr Young, you have no entitlement to free parking, and probably less need for this concession than others who are on the basic pension or are low income families.
The steps taken to offer ease of access to facilities in Bolton are to be applauded, and are sincerely appreciated by most people with disabilities. But your attitude Mr Young, leaves a rather nasty taste in my mouth. I certainly do not want something for nothing. And I do not want to be associated with your views.
Secondly, I would really like clarification of Mr Smart's predicament. Was Mr Smart really on only double yellows, or were there bars on the kerb, or unbroken white lines in the centre of the road? If the former, is Bolton Council really reneging on a national agreement? If so all Orange Badge holders are at risk, as they rely upon the information supplied with their badge. I feel that Bolton Council should as a matter of concern please clarify their position, so that we may act accordingly. If it is the latter, more power to the council, for irresponsible use of the badge brings the entire system into disrepute -- and it needs all the public support it deserves.
