AWAY results have been pretty decent this season but years of experience tells you not to expect too much on these long distance jobs - and Norwich is one of the longest and the most awkward!
So you set out with the express intention of enjoying the day and hoping, just hoping, there's a point or three as well as a pint or three to savour on the way home.
Thanks to a couple of cracking headers by Michael Ricketts and Gudni Bergsson Saturday turned out to be well worth the time, the cost and the effort.
Not the most memorable of performances - functional and professional rather than sensational or inspirational - but back in 77-78, when Big Sam was playing for Ian Greaves' Second Division Championship winning team, many of the away results were seen as a means to an end rather than showpiece events.
We feared the worst in the early stages and when Ricketts had that penalty appeal turned down, the signs were not very encouraging at all. Lunch looked like being the high point of the day!
We were a long way from the incident but it looked a good shout. We'd had a good view, though, of the three speedy attacks that sliced through the Wanderers' back four and you wouldn't have given them a snowball's chance in hell of keeping a clean sheet.
Thank goodness for Jussi Jaaskelainen! He bought us some time and, as the defence tightened up and Norwich's early impetus petered out, we started to think we could be on for something.
Three points was asking a lot with Ricketts up there on his own and Jaaskelainen too often tempted to launch long balls in his direction but Wanderers started the second half as positively as Norwich had started the first, stringing some good moves together, and suddenly our hopes were raised.
We should have been in front earlier but Marshall in the Norwich goal pulled off amazing saves to keep out Ricardo Gardner's shot and Ricketts' header. But the keeper was left flapping and flailing as the goals went in and our fifth away win of the season was in the bag.
Big Sam gave us a wave, Watford lost and the Good Pub Guide came up trumps again!
Man of the Match: Gudni Bergsson
