BOLTON MP David Crausby supported Friends of the Earth in their campaign for improved organic farming conditions.
The group braved Saturday's wet weather in Victoria Square and handed-out postcards asking members of the public to support the Organic Food and Farming Targets Bill.
The Bill aims to establish 30 per cent of UK farmland in organic farming by 2010 as at the moment 70 per cent of organic produce is imported, which means farmers lose out on the boom in demand and some consumers are reluctant to buy it because of the considerable expense.
David Crausby said: "The aim is to try to make organic food more affordable because it is quite expensive at the moment.
"I eat organic food myself sometimes and my wife has banned me from ever eating sausages!
"In the light of the BSE crisis we all need to be much more careful about what we're eating."
Bolton Friends of the Earth co-ordinator, Phil Newsham, said: "We want the Government to put more money into organic farming because more people are likely to buy organic food if it is cheaper instead of being imported into this country."
