SAM Allardyce is refusing to concede defeat in his bid to sign Sunderland defender, Paul Butler.

The former Bury centre-back has joined Wolves on a month's loan, apparently with a view to the transfer being made permanent if he impresses.

But sources on Wearside suggest Wanderers, who first made an approach for Butler last month, could have first refusal on the 28-year-old, provided they can match Peter Reid's asking price.

The solid defender, who has failed to command a regular first team slot this season at the Stadium of Light, is valued at around £1.2 million.

Whether Wanderers can afford the financial package to match any possible Wolves bid remains to be seen but it looks certain that Allardyce will try every avenue and will certainly not rest until he has signed a central defender.

And, despite having made a firm enquiry for Coventry's out of favour Scotland international, Colin Hendry, Butler still appears to be his first choice with Pierre Njanka, the talented Cameroon international, a possible alternative.

The £400,000 rated Strasbourg defender has impressed during his trial at the Reebok and could get an outing in the reserve team fixture against West Brom at the Reebok on Wednesday night.

Carsten Fredgaard, who made his debut as a second half substitute in the 2-0 win at Norwich 24 hours after joining Wanderers on loan from Sunderland, is also expected to be given a runout.

John Gope-Fenepej, the French defender on loan from Nantes, became the 26th player used by Wanderers this season when he substituted for Ricardo Gardner in the closing minutes at Carrow Road.
