A TEENAGER was injured after a car spun out of control, hitting a lamppost and stone wall before landing in a field.

Daniel Cook, who was a back-seat passenger, suffered serious head and chest injuries on Saturday and was admitted to the Royal Bolton Hospital.

The 18-year-old escaped from the wreck of the car with the driver, Anthony Godfrey, aged 20, and two other passengers.

Police are appealing for witnesses of the accident which happened on Belmont Road, near to its junction with Scout Road, at 3.30pm.

Part of the road was closed for an hour after the accident, which is the latest of many on the notorious stretch.

Daniel flagged down a passing vehicle to ask for help.

Police believe the elderly couple who stopped to help were not from Bolton.

They offered to take the two most seriously injured youths to the nearest hospital, but nobody involved in the accident knew where it was.

Daniel asked to be taken to his girlfriend's home in Breightmet.

His friend, who is believed to have later declined hospital treatment, was dropped off in Tonge Fold.

Daniel's girlfriend phoned for an ambulance.

His grandparents, Barbara and Barry Cook, who brought Daniel up and live at Gregory Avenue, Breightmet, were shocked to hear that their grandson had been involved in an accident.

Mrs Cook said: "Daniel and his friends had been for a drive.

"I feared the worst when his girlfriend said he had turned up at her house after a car accident.

"I couldn't get much sense out of him in the hospital, but he says he remembers the car hitting some water and the back end of the car spun round and round.

"He was pleased to see us, but was feeling very sore. Daniel and I are very close and as I walked into the hospital ward I could hear him saying 'get my nan'.

"He was frightened because he's not been in hospital before.

"His face is badly bruised and cut, he has a few broken ribs, broken teeth and his leg is in traction."

The former Withins High School pupil, who works at Bolton Plastics, has a 14-year-old brother Craig and sister Rebecca.

Mrs Cook said: "It was Rebecca's 16th birthday on Saturday, so it wasn't much of a day for her."

The driver of the car, Anthony Godfrey, of De Lacy Drive, Tonge Moor, waited at the scene of the accident with his girlfriend. They were taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital and were treated for minor injuries. Daniel was allowed home from hospital yesterday.
