I WAS very interested to read of Mr Colin Stott's experience (BEN: November 13) in which he had £30 deducted from his bank account for a BT Cellnet top-up which he knew nothing about.
I do not own a mobile phone either, but had an identical experience almost eighteen months ago -- same bank (Lloyds TSB), and same drawer (BT Cellnet), but in my case, the amount in question was £50.
My bank told me that they had received many similar complaints which were attributable to "computer error."
The money was duly reinstated and follow-up letter stated that the bank's processing agents were investigating. It is disturbing to learn that this type of fraud is still being perpetrated.
Several weeks ago. I ordered a meal in a Norfolk restaurant for myself and a colleague. I was asked how I would be paying, and I replied that it would be by Visa. I was then asked to leave my Visa card with them for the duration of the meal (presumably as a precaution against us walking out without paying). I was reluctant to do so, and offered to pay in cash, but that was declined. Even cash in advance was not welcome. I wonder why?
