I READ with dismay that Bolton Council are considering scrapping Bolton's 109 school crossing patrols (BEN: November 9). I was particularly alarmed to hear that the dangerous crossing at the busy Farnworth Moses Gate junction is without the school lollipop lady.
According to the Bolton Evening News, a council spokesman (whoever that was) said: "There are traffic lights at the crossing point, so we had to move a temporary lollipop man to an area where there are no lights or pelican crossings."
I live near this crossing and pass it most mornings on my way to work. I can assure the Council spokesman that to get to the controlled green man traffic lights, one has to cross over very busy streets without traffic lights to get to a small island, where young children saturate the island while waiting to cross the busy main Bolton Road.
I suggest that Farnworth Councillors Spencer, Stones and Johnston get up in the morning and stand at this dangerous crossing from about 8.30am and watch pedestrians from five years of age having to take risks to get to school. If the truth was known, Bolton Council is in the grip of cut-backs from the Labour Government. The cut-backs are putting young children's lives at risk.
Once again Farnworth loses out while labour councillors harp on about listening and caring.
It's no good just listening! Farnworth needs action before we have a death at Moses Gate! I look forward to seeing the three councillors keeping an eye on the situation when I pass by.
