REMOVAL vans rolled up this week to clear the fixtures and fittings from Leigh Royal British Legion club.
The Windermere Road building, once one of the premier social clubs in the area and renowned for its Wednesday night social evenings, is being put up for sale by RBL headquarters.
The club closed almost on the eve of Remembrance Day but the branch will continue catering for the welfare of ex-Service personnel.
Noel Mulligan, at RBL regional head-quarters in Warrington, said: "The building will be sold and there are interested parties."
Meanwhile Legion stalwarts have found new branch headquarters at Leigh Conservative Club in Railway Road.
Secretary John Kelly revealed how officers had searched for a smaller building which would be more suitable for current use than the massive Windermere Road premises.
"We did talk about moving to the old Norweb Club building in Henrietta Street," Mr Kelly said.
But, he said, once the sale of the Windermere Road building had been settled the branch was hopeful they could secure their own premises.
He added: "It was a sad day when it closed but we must now look to the future. And that is one of the reasons why we had a little girl lay a wreath on the war memorial on Remembrance Day.
"It symbolised how younger people will always be able to come to pay their respects," he said.
It was a big honour for Cloe Danielle Schofield, aged six, of Leigh. The Leigh CE Infant School pupil, an annual attendant at Remembrance Sunday services, is pictured here with her mum Amanda Atherton and Mr Kelly.
