LOCAL companies are reported to be queuing up to enter a prestigious business competition which culminates in a glittering presentation ceremony in Chorley.

Lancashire Area West Training and Enterprise Council (LAWTEC) and Business Link North and Western Lancashire has reported a flood of inquiries for the 2001 Lancashire Area West Business Awards.

The competition, launched last month, has the backing of top business from across the area.

More than 150 local organisations have come forward and are now preparing their entries in advance of the December 15 competition deadline.

The awards is now in its fourth year and has become widely recognised as the most prestigious business competition in the area, according to LAWTEC.

This year's competition will comprise seven categories, each offering £1,000 prize money and a trophy. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Park Hall Hotel, Charnock Richard, on February 23 next year. The categories are:

The Barclays Business of the Year Award.

The University of Central Lancashire Award for Innovation.

The Leyland Trucks Award for Export Achievement.

The BAE SYSTEMS Award for Business Excellence through People.

The BNFL Business and Education in Partnership Award.

The DTI Award for Excellence through e-commerce.

The Business Link Small Business of the Year Award.

Tony Bickerstaffe, managing director of LAWTEC, said: "We are delighted at the response form local organisations to the 2001 Lancashire Area West Business Awards and look forward to an exciting competition which reflects the wealth of business excellence across the area."
