LATE-night Christmas revellers can walk city centre streets in more safety after the launch of a new scheme.
Greater Manchester Police is spearheading a Nitenet radio communications system to help bars, clubs, restaurants and night-time businesses become aware of any potential problems.
Owners and managers of the premises are being enouraged to use the Nitenet radio system, with the radios being carried and monitored by police officers whenever possible.
PC Stuart Pizzey, community safety officer, said: "This is yet another key element of GMP's commitment to reducing crime and the fear of crime."
The system was launched in Manchester city centre.
Gordon McKinnon, city centre manager, said: "This two-way radio system will be an important part of the strategy to reduce crime and the fear of crime in Manchester city centre."
