Horwich Cycling Club staged their annual cyclo-cross event at a new venue this year, switching from Leverhulme Park to the scene of road races from the past, Queens Park.
On the morning of the event there were torrential downpours and it seemed the race might not go ahead, but thankfully the weather improved slightly and club members got down to the business of marking out the course out.
First off were the juniors, followed by the under 12's and at 2pm it was time for the seniors.
From the flag, Harwood rider, Darren Kay stormed off into the lead closely pursued by team-mate, Roy Hunt, however at the end of the first lap, positions had settled down but Kay still held the lead.
Riders had to battle through worsening conditions and the course was very muddy, despite this there were still smiling faces on some of the riders as they went past the start/finish and for Horwich CC, the ever improving Dave Headon and Dave Leyland were riding strongly.
At the finish, after ten laps Darren Kay was the outright winner from L.Craven and Stuart Green.
Riders agreed that the course was well set out suiting novice and expert riders alike and from the club point of view it was also a success with 46 senior riders starting.
Many thanks must go out to club members who turned out to assist in marshalling etc., their efforts were greatly appreciated.
Club runs have now resumed and meet on Sundays at 9.30 am on the corner of Beaumont Road and Chorley New Road. Distances are usually 60-70 miles and all are welcome. For details contact Chris Taylor on 01204 596183 or visit www.horwichcc.freeserve.co.uk.
