UNITED Utilities -- one of the North-west's biggest companies -- made a profit before tax of £359.7 million in the six months up to September 30.

The company made £226.2 million in the same period last year.

It was announced today that the board had declared an interim dividend of 15 pence per share -- an increase of two per cent.

The interim dividend will be paid on February 12, 2001 to shareholders on the register at close of business on December 15, 2000. Chief Executive John Roberts said: "We have completed the reshaping of the group to maximise multi-utility synergies, to focus on cost control and to expand our non-regulated activities."

He said Vertex had won five new contracts which extended the scale and breadth of its activity in the business process outsourcing market.

Its external order book now stood at £850 million.
