Jack the lad lifts Crewe
Wanderers would be foolish to believe Crewe will be whipping-boys when they visit the Reebok on Saturday as they found out to their cost last season.
Dario Gradi's men held the Wanderers at the Reebok while the season before produced shock wins to help ensure their First Division survival.
Crewe are still struggling a little in the lower half of the table, but their cause was helped by an impressive 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday last week.
Gradi openly admits he is trying to turn his players into students of the beautiful game, showing videos of Real Madrid and Manchester United, and it looks as though it's beginning to pay off.
Says Gradi: "I say to the players, I know you haven't got the ability of those international class players, but you can at least think like them."
One of the main dangermen is Rodney Jack, who inflicted so much damage on his last visit to the Reebok.
Currently Jack is allowed to drift wide-right, but often joining in the attack in a more central role. His pace over the first 10 yards is electric and he makes intelligent darting runs. Plus, he clearly likes the big stage.
Then there is Chris Lumsden, an intelligent left-sided player, whose cross resulted in striker Mark Rivers' stunning 12 yard volley, which saw off the Yorkshire side.
In defence there is Efe Sodje to contend with, a young centre back who is starting to play with increasing authority. He was man of the match against Wednesday.
In short, Crewe are a side who like to play their football through the midfield and there's no shortage of commitment and skill there.
Underestimate them at your peril.
