A DRUNKEN man entered a house looking for cigarettes to roll a joint but ended up kicking the dog.

He then attacked the owner and his son with a spade and two pans, it was alleged in court yesterday.

Ian Ronald Goldsmith denied hitting 70-year-old Thomas O'Neill with a large saucepan so hard that it dented the pan and broke the handle.

He then swung the pan at Mr O'Neill's son, David, who managed to deflect it with his arm before turning his attention to a chip pan.

Mr O'Neill had been stunned by the blow but later, during the brawl in the kitchen, he came round and bashed Goldsmith with a garden spade.

Goldsmith was arrested nearby suffering from head wounds but claimed he had been hit by another man as soon as he entered the house.

The victims maintained they had caused his injuries fighting off his attack.

Yesterday, Goldsmith, of Kay Brow, Ramsbottom, appeared at Bolton Crown Court and denied wounding Thomas O'Neill with intent to cause actual bodily harm and assaulting David O'Neill causing him actual bodily harm.

Incident

Jeremy Grout-Smith, prosecuting, said that the incident happened at Thomas O'Neill's home in Ashwood Avenue, Ramsbottom, on June 30.

David O'Neill was standing in the doorway with his dog when Goldsmith allegedly walked up to him in an aggressive manner.

Goldsmith pushed David O'Neill down the hallway into the kitchen but when Thomas O'Neill intervened Goldmsith punched the pensioner in the face and kicked him.

Mr O'Neill picked up a spade in the kitchen but Goldsmith took it from him and made as if to him, but was stopped by his son.

He then took the saucepan and delivered a blow so heavy to Thomas O'Neill's head that the pan was dented and the handle snapped off.

Mr O'Neill was stunned and suffered a laceration to his head causing heavy bleeding.

Goldsmith went for the chip pan containing cold fat but was disarmed by David O'Neill.
