LEARNING has become the centre of attraction in an area of Bolton with the opening of a new facility to help adults to help themselves.
Education chiefs and civic dignitaries were on hand recently to cut the ribbon at the new Family Learning Centre at No 6 Tonge Old Road, Tonge Fold.
The centre, run by Bolton Council's Community Education Service (CES), has been funded through the Government's Single Regeneration Budget (SRB).
The shop-fronted centre will provide a base for the area's Family Learning Project currently running in schools in the Tonge and Burnden areas, along with providing opportunities for adults who want to improve their IT, literacy and numeracy skills.
It was opened by Tonge ward councillor Frank White, chair of SRB4, and Alison Bowes, principal designate of the new Bolton Community College, of which CES will form a part from September next year.
Also present were CES project manager John Clarke and project co-ordinator Anne Waddicar.
Mrs Waddicar said: "The centre has a shop front so already lots of people are popping in to find out what's on offer. We will try to put on any courses for which there is a demand, but we can also direct people to other local English or Maths workshops which CES runs.
"For people whose children go to local schools we can invite them to the Family Learning Sessions which CES run in conjunction with the local schools -- these are sessions when we work with parents in their children's schools showing them how they can help and support their children with their English and Maths.
Computers
"Other classes running at the centre include computer workshops and community print 'drop-in' sessions. These sessions give individuals and community groups the opportunity to create posters, leaflets and newsletters using the facilities at the centre."
The Tonge Fold centre will also offer "Get That Job" sessions giving advice and help to people looking for employment including preparing a CV, filling in application forms and other job-seeking skills.
To find out more about what's on offer at the centre, contact Anne Waddicar or Sue Fisher on 01204 332410 or pop into the centre at No 6 Tonge Old Road.
