BOLTON seconds travelled to Ashton on Mersey and in a forward dominated match they came away 5-0 victors.
The try that sealed the game belied the conditions as the ball was moved from forwards to backs with slick handling and Soares timed the last pass to perfection to put in skipper Carletti in the corner.
The second 40 minutes saw an up front battle in which the Bolton forwards more than held their own and the defence of all 15 stood firm and registered a tight win against more senior opposition.
Many players deserved a mention for their efforts in the difficult conditions, but it was the nature of the teams desire to win that saw them through at the end.
As often happens in junior rugby the administrators got the pecking order of the bottom two games wrong. The thirds travelled to Ashton and lost convincingly 47-0, no one could fault their efforts against much stronger opposition and they were unfortunate not to get a consolation score towards the end with near misses by Baker and Rigby.
McGill and Hill worked tirelessly throughout the game but the home side always had too much power for the visitors.
In total opposition to the third team game, Bolton vets gave Ashton on Mersey thirds a torrid time at Avenue Street, winning 36-0, a scoreline that could have been much more if they had fielded any form of back division.
Tries were scored by Tonge, Singleton, McDermot and a surprising hat trick for Brocklehurst, who starred in the centre, perhaps all those years in the second row have been wasted as he crossed the line with ease on all three occasions.
Training continues on Tuesdays at Sharples School at 8pm and on Thursdays at the club starting at 7pm.
