JAYNE Neville's letter (Selfish drivers add to chaos on A666) seems to use a definition of selfishness somewhat at odds with mine.
Until recently I also used to have to travel the A666 between Bolton and Manchester twice a day through the perennial roadworks due to bridge strengthening.
However, I was actually cheered by the actions of those drivers who pulled over into the right hand lane to prevent selfish drivers passing the patiently queueing majority. Indeed, on occasions when I felt able to brave the glares of such blocked drivers in my rear-view mirror, I even did the same myself.
I feel sure Ms Neville would be most unhappy and quick to complain if someone went straight to the head of her queue in a shop or takeaway and got served ahead of her.
The situation on the A666 is exactly analagous. It is a queue of vehicles waiting to take their turn to go through a section of restricted flow. Signs warn of the closure of the lane up to 800 yards before it. Any driver who drives along the right of the queue in the face of these warnings is very likely to get through the restriction ahead of the queueing cars, despite arriving later. Indeed, all the queuing cars are delayed a little more for every car which passes them in this way.
The 'vigilantes' as she calls them are simply enforcing the rules of the queue so that all vehicles can get through in an orderly way and with minimal disruption to everyone.
If every driver were patient and acted courteously to other road users in such difficult conditions everyone would have a much less stressful journey and arrive safely.
