HAIL the unsung heroes.
A year ago Gareth Farrelly and John O'Kane were labouring to find their feet in the team and struggling even more to convince the fans that they weren't just making up the numbers.
Unconvincing performances in an unconvincing team, a collection of injuries and, in Farrelly's case, personal and disciplinary problems meant neither of the two recruits from Everton was able to secure a regular first team berth.
Even now, they don't hear their names ringing round the Reebok but Sam Allardyce - the man who matters - is delighted his first two signings have emerged as key members, not only of his squad but his first 11.
Despite the odd injury hiccup, Farrelly has played some of the best football of his career this season while O'Kane - one of the game's quiet men on and off the field - is enjoying his second extended run in the side.
"The energy of Gareth Farrelly has been exceptional for us this season," the manager acknowledged after seeing the Dubliner make a vital contribution in Sunday's win against Watford.
"He got a lot of moans and groans last year, justifiably so at times, because he couldn't get to the pace of the game.
"But he's dedicated himself, lost a lot of weight, got himself fit and is playing well again.
"John O'Kane as well ... they get passed over a little bit for the praise compared to the likes of Michael Ricketts, Per Frandsen and Gudni Bergsson but these two have done exceptionally well for us."
