I HAVE nothing against ice skating or small rides for young children.
Where I think that the Town Centre Company have let us all down is in their clear support for the placing of these additions all along Oxford Street and across Victoria Square.
Would it be so out of the question to take a small amount of road space for a few weeks to site these attractions, rather than the main pedestrian thoroughfare in Bolton?
Le Mans Crescent has been used before to locate special events, such as the Victorian Street Fayre, without any great loss to the ability of motor vehicles to access the town.
I know the Town Centre Company has a commercial perspective to bring to bear on its activities. However, it should not be completely blind to the benefit of public open space, the enjoyment that people have in their use of the central feature of Bolton, and the important contribution that pedestrian routes make to the vitality of our town.
We have spent a lot of money in making and keeping a town square to be proud of.
Why those with some critical influence over the image and advantages of the town centre would be happy with the blocking of main walking routes, greater litter and mess around these additions, and street conditions that simply make it harder for anyone with mobility impairments to use the town, is beyond me.
