HEAVY rain has once again hit racing causing the abandonment of today's cards at Plumpton and Wetherby.

And fixtures later in the week are also under threat from flooding and waterlogging.

Wetherby's meeting was called off after an 8.30 inspection on Sunday found the course to be waterlogged in places.

Head groundsman Ian Ward said: "We had six millimetres of rain overnight and the course is still flooded on the York Road side.

"Since last Monday we've had nearly two inches of rain so we didn't need a lot last night to put the meeting off."

And the meeting at Plumpton became the 26th meeting to be abandoned this season following heavy overnight rain.

Clerk of the course David McHarg said: "I don't have to wait until the 12.30pm inspection. We've had 14 millimetres of rain overnight so the meeting has been abandoned."

McHarg is hoping the course dries out in time for Plumpton's next fixture on January 1.

He said: "We've had 660 millimetres of rain in the last two and a half months. I could do with it stopping raining before Christmas so we can race on New Year's Day."
