THREE local pubs have a new owner. Avebury Taverns Ltd, an independent pub company based in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, has acquired all the interests of the Northamptonshiure-based Stanford Pub Company.

The 67 pubs involved in the deal include two in Bolton -- the Bradford Arms in Bradford Street and the Victory in Chorley Old Road -- and the White Lion in Manchester Road West, Little Hulton.

Avebury Taverns now owns 175 pubs in the North-west and 750 throughout England and Wales.

It is one of the pub companies which emerged in the 1990s to take over the running of pub estates from major brewers.

More pubs

Avebury intends to expand the estate to 2,000 pubs in the next three years and is looking at further acquisitions in the near future.

It says the pubs acquired in the North-west comprise a mixture of managed pubs (where the licensee is employed by the company) and franchised and tenanted pubs where the pub is operated by an independent business person.

Mr Peter Cavanagh, North-west regional operations manager for Avebury Taverns, said: "We are doing everything we can to ensure a seamless transition of ownership and we have started discussions with everyone concerned as part of our overall review.

"Avebury Taverns has a strong track record in helping its tenants continually to improve their businesses and to provide the best quality and best choice for their customers."

He added: "We are pleased to be meeting the needs of more local communities in the North-west as a result of this acquisition."
