I READ with great interest the front page story in Saturday's Bolton Evening News regarding the threat by GPs to resign en masse from the NHS.
It is quite clear to GPs in Bolton that the Labour Government is dragging its heels over a promise in last year's NHS Plan to modernise GPs' contracts. The unprecedented scale of disillusionment among GPs and Health Service staff is an indictment of Labour's incompetence.
GPs recall clearly that, last autumn, the Prime Minister blamed them for rising hospital admissions. They have not forgotten Tony Blair's insult. The real problems which GPs face are the constant upheavals in primary care organisation, the endless target setting, the increased form-filling and the scapegoating of the profession by Labour Ministers.
Many people in Bolton will remember how Tony Blair, at the last General Election, claimed that people had 24 hours to save the NHS. As with all public services, the Labour Party have let people down. Tony Blair and his Labour Government are all spin and no delivery.
