WE witnessed a watershed moment in sport this week. I refer to the sight of heavyweight boxing on the BBC.
It was hardly an inspiring fight but the sight of Lennox Lewis and Hasim Rahman grappling around the ring on the Beeb gave the sport more credibility than it has had since it was taken off terrestrial TV.
Unfortunately, it also showed how unexciting the heavyweight scene has become, especially compared to its heyday of the 60s and 70s which was portrayed in all its glory in a BBC documentary shown in the days leading up to the fight.
Lewis, Holyfield and Tyson are all right but they wouldn't have lasted two minutes with Cassius Clay/Muhamad Ali, George Foreman or Joe Frazier.
