WARREN Hegg faces a battle to get fit for Lancashire's Benson and Hedges Cup opener tomorrow after injuring himself in a soccer game.
The keeper was playing football with his Old Trafford team-mates when he hurt his foot and had to go to hospital for X-rays. Hegg was cleared of a fracture but had to use crutches over the weekend.
Jamie Haynes, who has had little chance at first team level because of Hegg's consistency and superb fitness record, was called into a squad of 14 for the clash with Durham at Liverpool's Aigburth ground.
Paceman John Wood is also a doubt with ankle trouble and Mike Smethurst is standing by.
Lancashire are hoping that Aigburth will provide some light at the end of the tunnel after all cricket was washed out at Old Trafford last week.
The championship clash with Surrey was abandoned without a ball bowled -- the first time that has happened in Manchester in 23 years -- and the waterlogged outfield caused the National League fixture with Hampshire Hawks yesterday to be called off 24 hours ahead of schedule.
All Lancashire's B and H home qualifiers this season were fixed for Aigburth several months ago. After Durham, they take on Derbyshire on Friday and Yorkshire next Sunday, squeezing in away trips to Leicester and Notts.
