THESE were the last scheduled matches of the season, although the youngsters have tournaments planned at Whitley Bay and Saddleworth over the next two weeks.
HCrosfields U12s 16 Westhoughton Lions U12s 18 - IN this, their last match together as a team, the Lions excelled. A fantastic all round performance saw Man of the Match, Carl Cunningham score yet another hat-trick. Golden Moment was awarded to Dominic Hughes as he scored his first ever try for the club.
The team was solid in defence with Top Tackler, Dale Forrest (who also scored a conversion), John Veal and Carl Cunningham all working hard. New Player, Ben Hall, in only his second match, was Most Improved Player, while Philip Wright and Robert Borden worked well in both attack and defence.
PWesthoughton Lions U8s 34 Waterhead U8s 28 - AFTER the disappointment of last week's Cup defeat, this was a "must win" match in order to restore confidence prior to the forthcoming tournaments. In fact, though they had too many tries scored against them, the Lions led the match from the very first touch of the ball; Most Improved Player, Matthew Crow skirting the defence and scoring the first of his three tries. Man of the Match, Alex Davidson scored the first of his four tries shortly afterwards.
HWesthoughton Lions U9s 24 Waterhead U9s 24 - IN the last meeting between these two sides, Waterhead were emphatic winners, so it is a measure of the Lions' improvement that after an outstanding match, the result was a draw.
Man of the Match was three try hero, David Parkinson whose last try, in particular would have been considered exceptional had it been scored by an Offiah or a Robinson! David changed the direction of his attack on no fewer than seven occasions, leaving the defence with no idea where he was going next. This was especially important, as, with the conversion, the points became level with only two minutes to go.
Ben Fairhurst scored the other Lions' try from a scoot on the last tackle. The tries were converted by Sam Dale, Ben Fairhurst, Michael Brett and Top Tackler, James Haydock. Michael Monaghan was winner of the Golden Moment award in this, his first match for the club, while Prop, Ceiron Podmore was Most Improved Player.
