TRAIN buffs didn't see a steam engine pull into Bolton yesterday -- because the station was deemed to be too busy.
Steam fans were hoping to catch a glimpse of the Glasgow Highlander, due to stop at Bolton to pick up travellers en route to Carlisle.
But the plans were shunted after enthusiasts were told the Trinity Street station would be full of commuters.
They were also told the train would struggle to climb a steep hill around a mile from the station.
The train -- officially called LMS Stainer 'Black 5', number 45157 -- by-passed the town and went to Blackburn instead.
It did steam through Lostock station at 9.37am, keeping some fans happy at least.
Pete Shaw, a member of Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line which celebrates its 125th anniversary today, said: "We would have liked to have picked up people in Bolton because it's a major town.
"But plans are not always worked around what people want."
The train travelled from Manchester Victoria at 8.36am. Passengers paid £45 for the trip.
Mr Shaw said: "Our special anniversary train offered more than 200 miles of steam haulage."
