AFTER a series of rounders matches played in the rain, the sun actually shone on last Wednesday's Section 'C' match between Highfield XI and Hatfield 'A', but some people are never happy.

With the sun shining from behind the batter, fielders frequently complained, "I can't see anything for the sun."

It did, however, make a pleasant change although the under-foot conditions were soft and wet as usual. In fact, the bowlers were a little aggrieved at being given "bad low" for balls a couple of inches below the batter's knee when the leading foot was at the bottom of a six inch deep hole as the ball was released!

Highfield lost batters Liz Allcock and Lucy Todd first time round and with last batter and top scorer Val Todd scoring just eight runs, they were all out of a first innings 45. Hatfield, however, lost three batters on the first round, but eleven by Ruth Cupitt and nine by Paula Whaley gave them a single run lead at the interval.

Having failed to score in the first innings, Liz Allcock was last batter and top scorer with 19 runs in Highfield's second innings and Lucy Todd also made amends by hitting 14, including Highfield's only rounder of the game. These efforts helped push the Highfield total to a commendable 120.

As with their opponents, two Hatfield batters who failed to score in the first innings, both hit double figures in the second. Sharon Buller scored a steady ten whilst Pauline Brown survived a "no score" to finish with a rounder and a total of 12 runs. Ann Haydock, who started and finished with rounders, was Hatfield's top scorer with 19 to add to the three she scored in the first innings.

By the end of a pleasant match despite the difficult conditions, Highfield just sneaked victory by five runs at 120-115.
