HEATON boxer Amir Khan realised his dream at the second attempt when he became England National Schoolboys' U14s 49 kilo champion with a stylish win in the final at Barnsley Metrodome.

The 14 year-old lost in the final last year at a lighter weight, but had too much class and power for southern champion Billy Page from West Ham ABC, who won the title the previous year.

Amir, a third year pupil at Smithills High School had his opponent on the backfoot from the start and the judges unanimously gave him all three rounds.

His father Shajaad who was also in the corner along with coach Mike Jelly was naturally overjoyed with the outcome.

"It is all down to his training and focus and was well deserved," he said.

Jelly said he had been waiting for Amir to win the title from day one.

He said: "Amir's own dedication and hard work got him that title and if he keeps it up you'll see him in four to five years on the international scene. I really don't thing anyone can beat him at his weight and age."

It has been a long haul for the Bury Boxing Club member who began his quest for the championship in January and had to win six area titles - all inside the distance - before getting through to the final as northern champion. The youngster trained continuously to keep his weight at 49k and cut out junk food and jogged three miles every day.

He said: "Thanks to all the support given by my teachers, friends and family. It keeps me motivated to just get better and better."

Amir faces another big test next week when he travels with the England team to fight in Ireland.

His long-term ambition is to box in the Olympics and European Championships before turning professional, but will look to retain the English title for a few more years yet.
